TechWiseTV: Passpoint Gets Real at Mobile World Congress
Connecting to Wi-Fi outside of your home or office can be a frustrating experience. You must search through a list of SSIDs, hope you don’t fall for an ARP spoof, wait for a registration page to load, and have required credentials on hand before you can do whatever it was you hoped to do. Growing adoption of a not-so-new Wi-Fi standard called Passpoint® (Hotspot 2.0) is helping to create a seamless, uninterrupted Wi-Fi roaming experience by automatically connecting users based on their credentials from their mobile or cable Internet provider. Cisco and its service provider partners designed and built the high-density Passpoint-enabled Wi-Fi network that supported more than 40,000 attendees at Mobile World Congress 2017 in San Francisco. The TechWiseTV team roamed the show floor (at 60 Mbps down and 70 Mbps up!) to speak with the experts responsible for this incredible network build. As well as the leaders behind the tireless push to make automatic, secure Wi-Fi connectivity ubiquitous wherever you go. • Matt McPherson, Cisco explains how Passpoint replicates the cellular roaming experience by handling certification and automatically discovering and connecting to the appropriate Wi-Fi network via a secure connection. • Shrikant Shenwai, CEO of the Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA) shares the current state of industry adoption and where the standard is heading--including advances in policy that will enable mobile devices to automatically connect to mobile data or Wi-Fi depending upon the quality required. • Derek Peterson, CTO of Boingo Wireless shares his thoughts on the growing public demand for seamless, uninterrupted Wi-Fi access, and why more service providers should embrace Passpoint. Boingo Wi-Fi subscribers, Sprint, and Charter Spectrum customers are among the first to enjoy automatic, secure connections at more than 150,000 Passpoint-enabled hot spots in airports and other public venues. • Mir Alami, Cisco shares the challenges of deploying a high-density Wi-Fi network capable of supporting audio, video, hot spot 2.0 authentication, SP offloading, and anything else that 40,000 of the most mobile-savvy attendees and exhibitors care to throw at the network. • Muhammad Imam, leader of the Cisco Catalyst® 9000 Series technical marketing engineering team explains the role his new programmable switches and Cisco DNA Center played in designing, provisioning, and delivering a full-blown software-defined Intuitive Network in less than a day.
